CARSON -- Sophomore
Ashley Wies tossed a complete-game 3-hit masterpiece as the Cal State Dominguez Hills TorosĀ took a 1-0 pitcher's duel win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino, before staging a comeback in the nightcap that fell just short en route to an 8-7 loss, splitting the first two games of the four-game CCAA set.
Wies was on her game again against the visitors, retiring the side in order in three of her seven innings pitched.Ā She fanned five Coyotes against just one walk in the gem.
The TorosĀ knocked six hits of their own, and benefited from the lone miscue of the game in the 3rd inning.
In that frame,
Alex Davis led off with a single, and advanced to 3B after
Amara LabonogĀ laid down a sacrifice bunt which the Yote first baseman fielded but threw erratically.
Two batters later,
Raquel Jaime brought home Davis with an RBI single up the middle to account for the eventual game winner.
Six TorosĀ each roped a hit in the win as Wies improved to 11-1 on the year.
In the nightcap, the Yotes took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd, only to have the Toros tie the game with single runs, courtesy of a
Maiya Lopez solo shot in the 2nd, a Coyote error in the 3rd, and another visitor's miscue in the 5th.
CSUSB replied, however, with five runs in the 6th, taking what seemed to be a commanding 8-3 lead.
That gap was cut to just one in the bottom of the 7th, however, as Lopez belted her second homer of the game, this one with the bases loaded to bring CSUDH to within 8-7.
That would be as close as the Toros would get, however, as CSUSB held on for the win.
Lopez finished the game with four hits and five RBI with Valencia contributing three hits in the loss.Ā
Alyssa Olague tossed 5.0 innings of work, fanning three in the process.
The two teams conclude their series with a double-header tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 12 noon on Toro Diamond.
