Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lair's Monster Effort Leads Toros Past Gators on Senior Day to Move Closer to Tourney Berth

Editor's note: This recap was misleading and inaccurate and corrected on Monday, February 21.  After the CCAA office further evaluated the women's basketball standings the next day, CSUDH has not officially clinched a spot in the upcoming tournament. Should CSUDH and Sonoma State tie in the CCAA standings, the Seawolves will take the tie-breaker based on the second tie-breaking procedure in the CCAA manual, which is each team's record against teams above them in the standings.

CARSON -- With all the pomp and circumstance of Homecoming and Senior Night, junior guard Dawnyel Lair led a ferocious Cal State Dominguez Hills effort with 17 rebounds and 14 points as the Toros took down visiting San Francisco State in front of a packed Torodome, moving closer to clinching a spot to the CCAA Tournament in two weeks.

The Toros also leap into fourth place in the CCAA standings, just one game back of crosstown rival Cal State LA. The Toros, with a 10-7 conference record, good enough for a .588 win percentage, puts them in a spot where a win at either Stanislaus State or Chico State will securing a berth.

Prior to tipoff, the Toros celebrated two senior classes in Lea Anderson, who played her final home game as a Toro, and assistant coach Katelyn Cole, who played three seasons in the Cardinal & Gold and missed out on her senior campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the Gators took a quick 5-0 lead to begin the game, the Toros clawed back, taking their first lead at 12-11 on an Amaya Snowden layup to close the quarter.

That bucked spurred a 14-6 second-quarter effort that pushed the host's lead to nine at the break.

The lead grew to 13 on a Lair layup with a minute elapsed in the 3rd quarter, only to see SFSU mount a comeback of its own, getting to with 43-38 after three.

The game grew frenetic to start the final stanza as the Gators got to within two at 43-41, but Lea Anderson's two free throws gave CSUDH some breathing room at 45-41, and a Hosanna Walker jumper and Anderson triple 70 seconds later pushed the Toro advantage to 50-43 with 7:15 left in the game.

SFSU looked to mount one final comeback as it cut CSUDH's lead to 65-60 with 63 ticks left, but four free throws from Snowden and Dawson Bell put any hopes of a comeback to bed as the Toros took the nine-point win.

Anderson finished with 15, Bell 11, and Walker and Snowden 10 each to give CSUDH five double-figure scorers.

The Toros conclude the regular season on the road next week, beginning with a Thursday night tilt at Chico State.
