CARSON -- Oh, what a difference seven days make.
Cal State Dominguez Hills starter
Dylan Steen bounced back from a rocky season-opening start last Friday to toss 6.0 innings, fan seven batters and allow no earned runs as the Toros ran away for an 8-1 win over visiting Concordia University Irvine on a warm Friday afternoon on Toro Field.
Alberto Luevano's three hits and
Emilio Barrera's four RBI paced the explosive CSUDH offense as the Toros moved to 2-1 overall on the young season.
After Barrera staked the Toros to a 1-0 lead in the second, the hosts answered CUI's single run in the third with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 6-1 lead, mustering just one hit but benefting from four walks and four hit batters in inning, also knocking out CUI's starter in the process.
With both teams unable to knock in any runs over the next 2.5 frames, the Toros added a pair of runs in the 6th inning, courtesy of his second double of the game.
That was plenty for Steen, who retired the side in order in three of his six frames of work to move to 1-1 on the year.
Scott Ogrin and
Matt Beserra also knocked a pair of hits as CSUDH belted 11 on the day.
Giovanni Besio came in for the final three innings, fanning three to pick up his first save of the year.
The two teams hook up tomorrow for games two and three in Irvine, with first pitch set of the opener set for 1 pm on Eagles Field.
