SAN BERNARDINO – Crosstown rivalries always have intensity and emotion.
Add a conference tournament championship into the mix and you will see a prize fight type of match.
That was the case when No. 3 and top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 8 and second-seed Cal State LA played for the CCAA Tournament championship at Cal State San Bernardino's Premier Field Sunday. Although the Toros struck first, the Golden Eagles tied the match just before halftime and eight minutes into the second period to win the match 2-1 to successfully defend their tournament title and win it for the fourth time since 2017.
Dominguez Hills is handed its first loss of the season to the same Los Angeles team it handed its first defeat to in the regular-season. Both teams have only one loss in the season and it's to each other. The Toros are 14-1-5 while the Golden Eagles are 14-1-3.
Although Los Angeles receives the CCAA's automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Super Regionals, the conference regular-season champions Dominguez Hills is confident that it will receive an at-large bid into the tournament, especially since the top team in the Super Region 4, St. Mary's of Texas, lost in the Lone Star Conference semifinal to an unranked team. No. 3 Colorado State Pueblo officially tied its RMAC Tournament semifinal but failed to advance following penalty kicks.
The NCAA Championship committee will meet and announce the 10-team regional field Monday at 3:30 p.m. It can be watched on
NCAA.com.
Sowe's first goal of the season was a beauty. With the possession, he passed it to
Logan Kaufman and received it back charging into the box for the finishing touch.
After a yellow card was issued with less than a minute left in the first half, the Golden Eagles capitalized on the free kick opportunity by slotting in the tying goal before halftime. Los Angeles then took a 2-1 lead in the 54
th minute.
The two sides increased the intensity after the second goal, with the Toros going on the attack the rest of the way and the Golden Eagles playing defense. Although on paper the Toros only recorded two shots in the second half, the pressure was kept on the Golden Eagles' side of the field the remainder of the half.
Dominguez Hills had one last opportunity to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining.
Zane Baumgardt, the hero in the first match against Chico State with the eventual winning goal, took a free kick from the top line of the goal box sailed over the crossbar.
For their efforts leading the team to the conference tournament final, Sowe, Baumgardt and fellow captain and defender David Aguilar were named to the CCAA All-Tournament team.
