Toros Show Heart and Confidence in Four Set Defeat to No. 25 Golden Eagles

CARSON – Coming off a three-set defeat to No. 25 Cal State LA Friday night, Cal State Dominguez Hills welcomed the Golden Eagles to the Torodome Saturday and made them have to earn the four-set win (25-21, 24-26, 25-27, 22-25).

Despite falling to 3-14 overall and 1-9 in the CCAA, the stats didn't quite show the effort the Toros made on Dave Yanai Court. The finished the night hitting 18.8 percent but racked up an impressive 54 kills.

Although she came up short from her season-high 16 kills, Ava Hurry still led the effort on the attack with 13 against the Golden Eagles. Camila Sanchez-Tellez and Samaya Royal each had 10.

Setter Angelina Cabal had 34 assists but highlighted her night with her first block assist in her collegiate career.

Down 10-7 in the opening set, the Toros went on a seven-point run to take a 14-10 lead. The Golden Eagles captured the lead at 16-15 but the Toros went on a 6-1 run to be put back ahead. Los Angeles got to within one (22-21) but Dominguez Hills got kills from Jesi Diekmann, Cassie Taylor and Shelby Saporetti to clinch the opening round.

Tied at six into the second game, the Toros went on an 8-2 momentum to take a 14-8 lead. But the tide changed over to the Golden Eagles as they rallied build a 19-16 lead. Los Angeles had the set point leading by two when Ava Hurry and a setting error allowed the Toros to tie the game. The Golden Eagles, though, capitalized on a service error and a kill to claim the set and tie the match at one.

The Golden Eagles started the fourth set leading 4-0. The Toros did catch up to them and kept it to within three the rest of the way. The match went into extra serves again. The Toros got a kill from Hurry to setup set point but the Golden Eagles scored three straight points to win the set and take a 2-1 lead.

Dominguez Hills opened the fourth round leading 8-5 until Los Angeles rallied to tie the set at nine apiece.  Both sides would trade off rallies until it was tied at 20. The Golden Eagles would win five of the remaining seven serves to collect the set point and match.

The Toros continue the homestand with Sonoma State visiting the Torodome Friday at 5 p.m.
