CARSON – Suliaman Bah scored the match's only goal while goalkeeper
Sebastian Ascencio and
Frank Aguilar each made critical saves to lead a defensive effort and preserve No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills shutout Cal State San Bernardino Sunday night.
The Toros improve to 9-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the CCAA. They keep pace with Cal Poly Pomona for first place in the standings after the Broncos beat Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata earlier.
The 1-0 win is also the third straight shutout and the seventh on the season.
San Bernardino (4-3-3, 0-3-1 CCAA), still in search of a win in conference play after having won four straight to start the year, played aggressively against the Toros from the beginning. The Yotes outshot the Toros 14-11 overall.
The first close shot of the match was in the 21
st minute, when Nicklaus Sullivan beat David Aguilar wrestling for the ball and fired a left-foot shot to the middle of the goal that was knocked down by a diving Ascencio.
But the one shot that mattered most for both sides was in the 35
th minute. As the Yotes were pushing into midfield,
Logan Kaufman took the ball away and passed it to
Kenny Lee up the middle. Lee got a foot on to feed the ball to Bah breaking from the defensive line. The keeper tried to break the rhythm but Bah hopped over and delivered the finishing touch for the goal.
San Bernardino was awarded a chance to score in the 54
th minute when a tripping foul awarded a penalty kick to the Yotes. Nicklaus Sullivan took the shot to the left side of the goal and was blocked by
Frank Aguilar, who made his second penalty kick save of the season.
The Yotes had another golden opportunity in the 65
th minute. The first shot hit the left post and a second shot off the rebound sailed over the crossbar.
Dominguez Hills will make its annual visit to the Dignity Health Sports Park's main stadium Thursday against Sonoma State. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
