POMONA – It had been a long wait, but the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team made their return to the court Friday for the first time since 2019. The Toros fought hard but came up short on opening day Friday, dropping a 3-1 decision to Western Oregon followed by a 3-0 defeat to Western New Mexico at Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.
Match 1 – Western Oregon 3, CSUDH 1
Returners
Nicole Peery and
Jenna Sandall led the effort up front with a combined 25 kills of the teams 40.
Bailey Fuches, making her Toro debut, earned a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs while
Gabbie Silva donned the libero jersey and made 17 digs to lead that category.
The Toros jumped out and had all cylinders, hitting .277 with 16 kills to take a 25-23 set-one win.
Match 2 – Western New Mexico 3, CSUDH 0
The Toros had a bit of trouble finding momentum until the third set. They jumped ahead 5-2 and had led by as many as six. The Mustangs would go on a 7-2 run to cut the score to 19-18. It became a game of cat-chasing-mouse toward the end with the Mustangs tying the set and the Toros breaking it until Western New Mexico scored three straight rallies to win the set 27-25.
Peery hit 29 percent of her attack and had 13 kills, the only Toro in double digits.
The Toros head back to Kellogg Arena one more time on Saturday to face Concordia (Calif.) at 1 p.m. Spectators are not allowed to attend but can watch the match for FREE on the CCAA Network.
