Jenna Sandall recorded four of her 11 kills in the deciding set, but Cal State Dominguez Hills came up just short of win No. 1 in a 3-2 loss to Sonoma State in the CCAA opener at the Torodome on Friday.
The Toros trailed two sets to one and was up 21-20 in the fourth set. The Toros ended up winning four of the next five serves to for force a deciding set. The Toros maintained the lead in the fifth round until the Seawolves evened the score at seven. Dominguez Hills retook the lead at 13-11 until Sonoma State won three straight rallies to play for the match point. The Toros would tie it on two different occasions, including a critical kill by
Renee Wheeler followed by a block that kept the match alive for Dominguez Hills.
But the Seawolves snuck two points off a kill from Brooklyn Jackson followed by an ace service by Riley Beyma.
In addition to the 11 kills, Sandall made 23 digs for a career-high.
Nicole Peery also had a double-double evening with 11 kills and a dozen digs.
Bailey Fuches made 18 assists but came up a kill short from a double-double as well.
The Toros won the first set thanks to a late rally which resulted a 7-2 run to win the opening round 25-22.
Dominguez Hills had a 22-21 lead in the fourth set. A service error followed by kills from Fuches and Sandall gave the Toros the 25-21 fourth-set win.
The Toros will have a short rest period as they are back in the Torodome to take on Humboldt State Saturday at noon. The Jacks are coming off a four-set loss to Cal State LA just up the 710 freeway.
