Volleyball Holds Off Reeling 'Jacks to Take Road Victory

ARCATA – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team earned their first true road win of the year Thursday night, defeating Humboldt State in four sets (25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 27-25) at Lumberjack Arena.

Dominguez Hills did earn a 'road win' in not ideal fashion. Cal State Monterey Bay was supposed to host the Toros in September but was put on the CCAA's COVID-19 protocol, thus forfeiting a conference win to the Toros.

In addition, the Toros also got revenge on Humboldt State after the 'Jacks snagged a four-set win in the Torodome earlier in the CCAA season.

Jenna Sandall and Bailey Fuches ended up posting double-double numbers on the night. Sandall tallied 11 kills and 17 digs while Fuches had a 17 assist, 14 dig night.

The Toros altogether hit 14 percent on the attack while needing to make 84 digs.

Dominguez Hills had a slim lead for most of the opening set. The 'Jacks got three critical points to make it a 15-13 deficit, but the Toros went on an impressive 10-point run to win the round.

Humboldt State took command of the second set by winning eight straight rallies to take an 8-1 lead. The gap stayed large until Dominguez Hills got to within two at 17-15. The two would trade of rally wins until the 'Jacks picked up the 25th point.

Trailing 4-2 at the start of the third set, the Toros put together a 13-2 run that would build them a 15-6 lead. The 'Jacks did put together a rally of their own, but it was not enough as the held on to win the bout.

The Toros then built a 20-14 lead in the fourth set. Humboldt State, however, rallied by going on a 7-1 run to tie the game at 21 apiece. Humboldt was on the verge of forcing a deciding set until Nicole Peery earned two of the Toros three-point rally to win the set and match.

Dominguez Hills closes the chapter of the returning 2021 season Saturday at Sonoma State. First serve has been moved to 3 p.m.
