Toros Beat Seawolves in Game 1; Game 2 Suspended Due to Darkness

ROHNERT PARK – With Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State looking at the forecast, the two sides agreed make Friday's contest the 9/7-inning doubleheader. Although the Toros came from behind and took the first game 5-4 in 11 innings for their fifth straight win, the two sides came up two days short from being able to flip their clocks forward into Daylight Savings Time as game two was suspended at 3-3 in the seventh inning due to darkness.

The two ballclubs will pick up where they left off (see below on the scenario) Saturday at 1 p.m. and will follow game three of the four-game CCAA series right after, pending on the weather.

Game 1 – CSUDH 5, SSU 4 (11 innings)
The Toros (10-9, 9-4 CCAA) had to play catchup from the sixth inning on after the Seawolves (6-12, 5-8 CCAA) scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Dominguez Hills tied the game in the eighth on Nick Henry's leadoff home run.

After two scoreless innings, the Toros broke the 4-4 tie in the 11th. Jose Jimenez led off with a single to center, Justin Morris moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Grant Decatrel brought him in with an RBI single up the middle.

Ricardo Serrano, who came in the 10th, pitched two shutout innings to earn his third win of the season. Starter Tristan Garnett made it through six innings giving up one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out a season-high nine batters, missing his career mark by one.

The Toros did strike first with two runs in the third inning. Decatrel led off with a walk and Aaron Greenfield hit a one-out double to put both of them into scoring position. After the Seawolves intentionally walked Pierson Loska, Henry followed with an RBI groundout to score in the first run. Greenfield scored when an error by the shortstop allowed Angel Estrada to reach base.

While Sonoma did get one run in its half of the third, Dominguez Hills responded in the fifth when Greenfield hit a leadoff home run down the left field line for his fifth of the year.

The Toros altogether racked up 13 hits.

While Sonoma took a 1-0 after the first inning, the Toros responded in the second. Jimenez walked and took second on a balk and scored when Nick Ade reached on an error by the second baseman.

The Seawolves answered back with a two-run second inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Toros came back in the fourth inning when Henry led off with a base hit through the right side and eventually scored on a Jeremy Ciolek groundout.

The seventh inning rally began with pinch-hitter Joe Canepa reaching on a walk. Austyn Tengan singled through the left side to move Canepa to second and Loska came through with a two-out RBI double.

Dylan Steen went seven innings striking out five while giving up the three runs on eight hits and two walks.

The suspended game will resume with somewhat of a clean start for both sides. The Toros will start the day off in the eighth inning with Justin Morris scheduled to leadoff in the sixth spot in the lineup. Head coach Tyler Wright will have his entire bullpen available since the starter Steen recorded the last out before the suspension and may have pitched his final inning for the weekend.
