Toros Close 2019-20 Campaign With Win At Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK - The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team closed out its 2019-20 season with a 74-61 win over Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Saturday at The Wolves' Den.

CSUDH (13-15, 10-12 CCAA) was led by junior Janelle Sumilong's 24 points. Senior Ahlisha Henderson collected her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Ariana Harper was the third Toro scorer in double digits with 12 points. Senior Destinee Williams collected 12 rebounds.

Neither team had clear control of the first quarter until the Seawolves sunk the final two baskets to take a four-point lead. The Toros trailed by 15 points, 24-9, midway through the second period, but responded with an 18-4 run, ignited by a Henderson layup and capped off by a 3-pointer from Harper to cut the margin to one, 28-27, at halftime.

Sumilong beat the third quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer as the two teams went into the fourth quarter even 46-46. The Toros started the final period with seven consecutive points, two layups from Sumilong, a free throw by senior Jasmine Phoolka and a basket by Williams, to take a 53-46 advantage and never trailed afterwards.

A Henderson layup with three minutes remaining gave CSUDH a 16-point lead, 68-52, which was their largest lead of the game. The Toros cruised the rest of the way to ultimately prevail by 13.
