Volleyball Blanks Academy of Art to Sweep the Opening Weekend

CARSON – Taylor Benitez-Fanslow had 10 digs but came a kill short from a double-double, Renee Wheelers tallied a dozen points off attacks and the Cal State Dominguez Hills complete the season-opening weekend sweep with a shutout victory (25-13, 25-11, 25-18) over Academy of Art at the Torodome Saturday, capping off a long weekend of hosting the Toro Classic.

Wheeler was near perfect on the attack front, going 12-for-15 with no errors for an 80 hit percentage. Benitez-Fanslow, coming off an impressive 45.5 attack percentage against Notre Dame de Namur last night, hit 33.3 against the Urban Knights. The Toros as a whole hit 26.5 percent while holding the Urban Knights (0-3) to a .037.

Lynda Nguyen led all Toros in the digs column by making 11 of the 56 total defensive stops.

The Toros had a tight battle at the beginning but a 13-4 run gave the Cardinal and Gold a commanding lead that would eventually turn into a set victory.

Up 8-6 in the second game, the Toros ran away with the lead again by winning 7-of-8 serves to take control of that round.

Academy of Art started out having cut the deficit to 6-5 at the start of the third game, but an 8-1 run setup the match victory for Dominguez Hills.

The Toros will visit the City by the Bay for a clash against the PacWest and Great Northwest Athletic Conferences in the annual DII West Region Showcase held at San Francisco State. Dominguez Hills faces Concordia (Ore.) and Humboldt Thursday, Fresno Pacific Friday and Dominican Saturday. Because of odd number of teams in the GNAC, Humboldt State will 'represent' the northern conference instead of the CCAA.
