LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team had two different tales in the first two games of Jim Maier's returning season, slugging to an 11-7 win over Concordia Portland but dropping an 8-0 mercy decision against Western Washington under the lights at Montana State Billings' Desert Stinger Friday.
 
The Toros (1-1) return to Majestic Park for day two of the Desert Stinger Saturday. Although Dominguez Hills is schedule to play the University of Mary (11:30 a.m.) and the host Yellowjackets (2 p.m.), rain is in the forecast. WHAT HAPPENED?
- The first game of the season for both squads turned out to be a slugfest as they combined for 29 hits, including three home runs and seven doubles. Dominguez Hills tallied 17 of those hits.
- After a scoreless first, the Toros would eventually put at least one run in each inning the rest of the way. They took a 2-1 lead in the third inning following back-to-back leadoff doubles by Au and Simon.
- The lead was bumped to 4-2 in the fourth when Rachael Sandoval hit a single up the middle to bring in Au and Jessica Lane. One inning later, Amanda Canizales singled through the right side to bring in Guzman to make it a 5-1 lead.
- After the Cavaliers answered with a run of their own in their half of the fifth, the Toros added two more runs the following frame when Simon crushed a pitch to center field.
- Freshman Ashley Wies was efficient her first five innings of work but appeared to show fatigue when the Cavaliers rallied to tie the game 7-7. Jessica Olvera stopped the bleeding and kept the score tied.
- The seventh-inning rally began with pinch-hitter Lexi Madrid getting hit by a pitch and Au following with a single. Simon broke the tie with a double to score in Madrid, however, the play continued on two errors to allow two more runs across. After Guzman singled and stole second, she eventually scored the 11^th run on Canizales' double.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- In a pitching matchup between freshman Wies and Viking senior Makinlee Sellevold, both sides kept the teams scoreless for four innings.
- Western Washington would implode with an eight-run, seven-hit fifth inning.
- The Toros' best chance in scoring a run came in the fifth inning, Canizales hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded.
 
POSTGAME NOTES
- In their seventh appearance in the Desert Stinger, the Toros are now 18-13.
