Toros Close 2019 With Road Win at Cal State Monterey Bay

Box Score SEASIDE - Cal State Dominguez Hills closed out the 2019 calendar year with an 81-62 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball matchup, Saturday at The Kelp Bed.

CSUDH (6-7, 3-4 CCAA) won its second game in a row, led by junior Janelle Sumilong's 18 points. Sophomore Lea Anderson and senior Destinee Williams pitched in 14 and 13 points, respectively. Serena Toney was CSUMB's (2-7, 2-5 CCAA) leading point scorer with 17.

The two teams were even in the first 10 minutes of play as the score was 16-16 at the end of the opening quarter. The Toros started the second frame with consecutive 3-pointers from Ariana Harper and Janelle Sumilong, respectively, to grab their largest advantage of the first half, 22-16. The Otteres answered with seven unanswered points to take the lead for a brief moment before a trey from Jasmine Phoolka on the ensuing possession got the Toros back on top for good for the rest of the game. The Toros took a four-point advantage into halftime, 34-30, with Sumilong's steal and coast-to-coast buzzer-beating layup.
CSUDH was on fire in the second half and scored a whopping 26 points to open the gap in the third period. The Toros went into the final quarter with a 15-point advantage and stretched it to 20, its largest of the contest, to make it 65-45 with 8:21 remaining on two free throws from Williams. CSUDH cruised the rest of the way to ultimately prevail by 19 points.

"This was another great team win for us today," said head coach John Bonner. "I feel like the last two games, we have had a higher commitment to executing our game plan for longer periods of time and we are doing a much better job of playing for one another. It's still early and we have more learning and growing to do, but today and Thursday's games give a glimpse of what we can be."

The Toros will have two weeks off before hosting Chico State in 2020 on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
