SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer program has waited a long 10 years and for the first time since 2009 the Toros will make an appearance in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament. CSUDH defeated San Francisco State by a score of 1-0, Saturday at Cox Stadium, to earn its way in.
The Toros will play at Stanislaus State in the first round of the conference tourney on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
CSUDH (8-7-2, 6-4-1 CCAA) has now won four straight games heading into postseason play. The Toros scored the only goal of the contest in the 19th minute as sophomore
Vanessa Campos made an overlapping run on the right side and hit a cross to junior
Holly Kaemerle in the middle of the box. Kaemerle collected the ball and hit a shot into the lower right corner of the frame. SFSU (2-14-1, 0-12 CCAA) goalkeeper Hayley Garriott was able to get a piece, but it wasn't enough as the ball hit the back of the net for the score. It was Kaemerle's eighth goal of the season, tying her for third in the CCAA.
CSUDH outshot the Gators 12-5 in 90 minutes of play. Goalkeeper
Alyssa Newsom was credited with two saves on the day and earned her third shutout of the season.
The win also marked head coach
Marine Cano reclaiming his title as the women's program's all-time winningest head coach with 144 wins over two stints (1984-94, 2018-present). He also coached the men's squad from 1985-93.
"I'm very excited for the ladies, they deserve this," Cano said. "I'm a demanding coach, I ask a lot of this team and they are coming through for this great university, Cal State Dominguez Hills. We are The Hills and on Tuesday we'll give Stanislaus State everything we got. We'll let the outcome of the game say where we are as a team."
