CARSON –
Taylor Benitez-Fanslow and
Rylee Brown combined for 29 kills and 17 digs as the duo helped the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team kept their postseason hopes alive following a four-set win (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15) over crosstown rival Cal Poly Pomona at the Torodome Friday night.
The win also completes the season-sweep for Dominguez Hills (12-7, 5-7 CCAA) over Cal Poly Pomona (6-14, 4-9 CCAA), the first time this has been accomplished since 2006.
Dominguez Hills hold onto fourth place in the tough CCAA South Division but is making up ground on idles Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego, both whom have eight wins. The Toros will see those two in San Diego country next weekend. San Marcos will be playing one less match due to the cancellation of their road match at Sonoma State last weekend because of the tragic fires around Napa Valley.
Brown had 15 kills while coming up a dig short of a double-double. Benitez-Fanslow had eight digs and 14 kills while completing 32 percent of her attacks.
Lynda Nguyen collected 11 of the Toros 51 total digs in the match.
The Toros had quite a battle with Bronco freshman Jazminn Parrish as the 5-foot-7 outside hitter tallied 18 kills and 11 digs on the evening.
After a tight battle with the Broncos in the first three sets, the Toros quickly jumped to a 7-1 lead at the start of the fourth game and never looked back. In fact, the Toros hit their best mark at 37 percent.
Dominguez Hills welcomes top-ranked Cal State San Bernardino to the Torodome Saturday at 7 p.m. The Coyotes swept the Toros at Coussoulis Arena last month.
