Otters Pull Away in Second Half

SEASIDE - It was a tale of two halves as Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to Cal State Monterey Bay by a final score of 3-1 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer matchup, Sunday at Otter Sports Complex.

The Toros (4-8-1, 3-5 CCAA) lit the scoreboard first in the 27th minute. On an Otter (8-4-1, 3-4-1 CCAA) long ball attempt, freshman Cesar Rivera, playing in the back line, sent a clearance down the left touchline that was won by junior Steven Espinoza and dribbled up the side. Espinoza crossed it in and freshman Christian Djurasevic, who was right in front of the net with his back turned to it, was able to get a touch on the ball over his head. CSUMB goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli initially saved it, but it slipped through his hands and past the goal line for the score.

The Otters responded right before the intermission in the 42nd minute as the two teams were deadlocked, 1-1, after 45 minutes of play. CSUDH held an 8-7 shot advantage up until that point.

The second half belonged to CSUMB. The Otters recorded eight shots and put away two goals in the 63rd and 77th minutes, respectively. The Toros had two shots in the latter half of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Bryan Shihad compiled four saves.

CSUDH will host UC San Diego on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. for its next matchup

Toro Notes: Shihad, Espinoza, Cesar Rivera, Roberto Rivera, Joshua Varon, Josue Cartagena, Jose Ruvalcaba and Dani van Steijn played all 90 minutes … Djurasevic scored his third goal of the season, tied for most on the team with senior Robert Roosen … Cesar Rivera recorded his second assist of the season and now has most on the team.
