Seven-Run First Inning Enough to Take Series Opener Over East Bay

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team went through the entire lineup and put up all their runs scored in the first inning en route to a 7-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association series-opening win over Cal State East Bay Friday.

In what was a Fernandez versus Fernandez pitching matchup, Rigo Fernandez hailed the victor after throwing five innings allowing an earned run and punching five.

His opposite, Andrew Fernandez, faced seven batters and in 30 pitches those individuals recorded five base hits and two walks to score seven runs and quickly end his day. The biggest damage came with the bases loaded and Kai Gomez, who started off the inning with a single, brought all of them home with a triple down the right field line his second trip.

The Pioneers got on the board in the fourth inning, when a lead-off error and a double put two runners in scoring position and were brought in on a groundout and two-bagger.

Dominguez Hills would be limited to singles the rest of the game against four different relievers. The Toros best chance to add more runs were in the eighth inning. Jeremy Ciolek led off with a single and was eventually stranded at third.

Jacob Musial came in relief for Fernandez in the sixth and threw three shutout innings. The Pioneers had a rally going in the ninth. A walk, a single and a throwing error quickly loaded the bases and a single scored in the first run and a hit batsman brought in the second.

Ian Codina managed to get the final two outs remaining for his first save of the season.

The two teams will square off in the usual 9/7 twinbill Saturday at noon.
