RIVERSIDE – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team racked up seven hits but could only produce one run in a 5-1 loss to No. 6 Cal Baptist under the lights Friday.
Two-three hitters
Jordan James and
Esteban Ortega got the only run in for the Toros (1-1) in the third inning. James singled to short, stole second and scored the game's first run on Ortega's double to left.
It was also the only lead for the Toros as the Lancers (1-1) responded with three runs of their own in that inning, including a two-run single that broke the. The Lancers added two more runs in the fifth to take the 5-1 lead.
The Toros had a chance in the seventh inning to get a run in.
Jesus Sanchez led off with a single and reached third on wild pitches but was stranded.
Willie Traynor lasted 2.1 innings in his Toro debut. Three was his number on the night as it was the amount of hits, runs allowed, walks and strikeouts he had on 66 pitches.
Jacob Musial,
Luke Laurita and
Matt Stearns tossed shutout innings the rest of the way.
Justin Montgomery made it through four innings in his start for the Lancers, allowing the one run but struck out eight.
The rubber match of the season-opening non-conference series moves back to Toro Field Saturday at 2 p.m.
