CSUDH’s Season Ends at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA - The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team's 2017-18 campaign came to an end in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament against Cal Poly Pomona, Tuesday at Kellogg Arena. The Toros put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell by a final score of 80-67.

CSUDH finishes the season with a 13-15 overall record, a nine-game improvement over last season. The Broncos move onto the CCAA Tournament semifinals with a 20-8 overall record.

Junior guard Nautica Morrow led the Toros with 16 points, six assists and five steals. Senior forward Taylor Farris recorded her ninth double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists. Junior guard Heaven Holmes pitched in 11 points with three 3-pointers made.

Neither team could grab a clear advantage in the first quarter as the Toros trailed 20-18 at the end of the first 10 minutes, with 11 combined points coming from Farris and Morrow.

The Broncos erupted for an 11-2 run to begin the second period and nabbed their biggest advantage of the first half, 31-20. CSUDH responded with seven unanswered with a Zhane Carter 3-pointer and layup, and a Morrow jumper, to make the score 31-27. CPP led 36-29 at halftime.

The Toros cut the margin to three, 36-33, after two quick buckets to start the second half, but the Broncos stretched it to 14 points, 58-44, at the end of the third quarter. CSUDH scored seven unanswered points to begin the final period with a free throw from sophomore forward Ahlisha Henderson, and two 3-pointers from Morrow and Holmes. It would be the closest that the Toros would get for the rest of the game as CPP ultimately prevailed by 13.
