Almeida Hat Trick Lifts CSUDH Over Pioneers

CARSON - Down two, sophomore midfielder George Almeida scored three goals in the span of 7:20 to give Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer the edge over Cal State East Bay by a final score of 3-2 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Saturday at Toro Stadium. CSUDH improves to 4-8-2 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Pioneers drop to 3-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the CCAA.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- CSUEB scored its first goal in the ninth minute from Jonathan Ayala to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Pioneers increased their lead in the 62nd minute from Ayala once again.
- In the 75th minute, George Almeida found the left side of the net on a cross from Stefan Skrinjaric to cut the margin to one.
- Less than two minutes later, Almeida took a free kick from just outside the top of the box. Almeida's shot curled past the CSUEB wall and into the left side of the goal for the equalizer.
- In the 83rd minute, Joshua Varon's corner kick from the left side came short to the near post. Almeida sprinted out, turned his body and got hit the ball with his back heel for the score.
- The Toros outshot the Pioneers 27-13 in the game.
 
TORO NOTES
- Freshman Brady O'Neill made his CSUDH debut.
- With his hat trick, George Almeida now leads the team with four goals.
- Joshua Varon compiled his third assist of the season. He overtook Manuel Paez, George Almeida, and Stefan Skrinjaric for the team lead. Skrinjaric recorded his second assist of the season and was in a very brief tie with Paez, Almeida and Varon for the team lead.
- Roberto Rivera played a full match for the 10th straight game and has played a full match in 11 out of CSUDH's 12 contests this season.
- D'Morea Alewine has played 75 minutes or more in all 12 games this year.
- Aweyso Aweyso played a full match for the fifth straight game.
