WHAT HAPPENED?
- Dominguez Hills had to come from behind to start the first round after trailing 6-2. The Toros got on a 10-1 momentum to take a 10-7 lead.
- The Toros had to dig themselves out of a five-point deficit in the second set. They did eventually catch up to the Wildcats and even the round at 16 points apiece, highlighted by two kills from
Cecelia Lucas. The Toros built a 22-19 lead shortly after and went on to win the set behind a Duru kill and two Chico errors.
- Both teams would reach nine points off of rallies to start the third set and eventually go back-and-forth with the lead three times. Dominguez Hills would eventually win six of the next seven serves with help from freshmen
Rylee Brown and
Renee Wheeler.
- Even though Dominguez Hills bested Chico (12-11, 5-10 CCAA) in three sets, the Toros had a hard time taking the set point. The Toros had eight total set point opportunities between the first and third rounds.
- The Toros did a stellar job holding Chico's Kim Wright below her season average in the attack percentage. The junior finished with six kills and a .111 percentile.
MATCH NOTES
- The Toros beat the Wildcats for the first time since November 15, 2013. Chico still leads the all-time series 11-37.
- Dominguez Hills' postseason hope is still alive despite Cal State San Marcos beating winless Humboldt State in three sets in San Marcos. The Cougars, who hold the fourth and final spot to represent the South Division in the CCAA Championship, picked up their seventh win and needs two more to officially eliminate the Toros.
-
Jordan Ramirez finished with 30 assists to increase her streak of recording that many sets or more for the fourth straight match and the fifth time in the last six.
- Since the Toros got on the four-match win streak,
Esther Duru has been averaging 4.43 kills per set and is averaging 42 percent on the attack. She's also tallied for 15 total blocks.
Jordan Ramirez, meanwhile, has been averaging more than 10 assists per set.
WHO'S NEXT?
The Toros' final road trip of the season will not be an easy one as they will visit No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino Friday and then No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. Both are 7 p.m. starts.
