Toros Suffer First Loss of Season to Northwest Nazarene

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team fell to Northwest Nazarene by a score of 2-0 in non-conference action, Thursday at Toro Stadium.

The Toros lose their first match of their 2017 campaign and drop to 2-1. The Crusaders improve to an identical 2-1 record.

NNU's two goals came from Michael Bryant and Carlo Rodriguez-Diaz. Bryant was also credited with an assist on the first score. Crusader goalie Jacob Hillyer had four saves. CSUDH keeper Chase Gentry, who made his season debut after missing the first two contests, also amassed four saves.

NNU got its first goal in the 18th minute as Bryant's cross found Rodriguez-Diaz's legs and into the back of the net. The second score for the Crusaders came with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Gentry misplayed a ball as Bryant curved a ball from the end line and into the goal.

The Toros had two good opportunities to score. In the 31st minute, freshman defender Matt Lockwood was able to get a foot on a loose ball inside the box, but found Hillyer instead of the back of the goal. In the 77th minute junior midfielder Adam Vargas got past the goalie, Hillyer, but his shot was blocked by a Crusader defender.

CSUDH will have one day off before facing Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Stub Hub Field 3.
