Bresson Throws a Gem to Start Senior Weekend; Toros Fall Twice to Seawolves

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team let Sonoma State rally twice in the late innings as the Seawolves won the pitching duel 5-3 in game one and then took a 15-14 slugfest before the sunset Saturday.

With one game remaining, the Toros will have a pregame ceremony to honor the senior class at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. First pitch is to follow at around 11 a.m.

Game 1 – SSU 5, CSUDH 3
Joe Bresson was stellar in what is very likely his final outing in a Toro uniform, allowing just an unearned run in 7.2 innings while striking out five.

The Toros had struck early with a 2-0 lead after two innings. In the first, John Soteropulos was hit by the pitch with two outs and scored on Esteban Ortega's double to right. Two innings later, Nick Morelli singled to third, advanced to second on a ground out and found his way home on back-to-back wild pitches to give the Toros a 2-0 lead.

Sonoma State's only earned run was scored in the fourth inning on a RBI double. The Seawolves ended up tying the game in the sixth inning with the aid of a throwing error. A throwing error with two down in the top of the eighth proved to be deeply costly as it allowed two runs across to give the Seawolves a 4-2 lead.

Dominguez Hills did get one run back in the eighth. Evan Yeager hit a single to center that was deep enough for pinch-runner Brandon Evans to score from second.

The Seawolves regained the two-run lead in the ninth but the Toros began a rally in their half. With the bases loaded, Miguel Castaneda was robbed of what could have been at least a RBI single on a line drive caught by the third baseman and a pop up to first base ended the game.

Soteropulos had a three-hit game, including double. Ortega also had a pair of two-baggers.

Game 2 – SSU 15, CSUDH 14
The late game started out in favor of the Toros after putting five runs on the board in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run blast by Ortega.

Although the Toros had scored at least one run in the first seven innings, the Seawolves put that many on the board in the eighth that eventually gave them a 15-13 lead.

Both teams combined for 38 hits in the nightcap, including 16 for extra bases. Two of Soteropulos' three hits were for two bags and he also driven in three RBI. Daryl Donerson was a home run shy from the cycle, having doubled in the first, triple in the third and single in the sixth.

Nick Suniga had thrown 3.1 innings giving up four earned runs on six hits and five walks. Jacob Musial pitched into the eighth inning where he started getting into trouble with that seven-run barrage. He finished being charged for six despite fanning five.
