Softball Falls to No. 9 Chico State

CARSON – Madison Murphy had a three-hit day and Lyzette Reveles hit a grand slam in the afternoon cap but the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team couldn't stop No. 9 Chico State's slugging in the doubleheader loss at Toro Diamond Saturday.

Game 1 – CSUC – 7, CSUDH – 1

The Wildcats tried to quickly get on the board after Sarah Galaviz led off with a single to left. After a wild pitch moved her into scoring position, she tried to score on Kristin Worley's single but the arm of the center field Murphy beat the runner at home. The Wildcats would eventually get two runs across as a result of a double steal on a first and third situation.

Chico State (15-2, 11-1 CCAA) added five more runs throughout the game, four coming from the long ball.

The Toros prevented the shutout in the sixth inning. Murphy reached on a single, stole second, advanced to third on Jazmin Guzman's ground out and scored on Jade Loe's soft grounder to the shortstop.

CSUDH battled at the plate as no Toros struck out. Damari Simon and Kendelle Messersmith both had one hit while Murphy had two.

Loe recorded the loss for the Toros.

Game 2 – CSUC – 16, CSUDH – 6

Dominguez Hills jumped on the scoreboard first during their own first and third situation as Simon stole home while Messersmith was tagged out by Rachel DeHart.

After tossing the last four frames of game one, Shaire Albert pitched a stellar three innings as the Wildcats went three up-three down in the first two and scored an unearned run in the third.

CSUC proved why their program is ranked No. 9 in the top of the fourth as they scored 11 runs off 11 hits. Claire Wayne hit her second homerun of the day for the Cats.

The Toros continued to battle taking advantage of two Wildcat errors and scoring one more run.

Four more runs and five hits were added to Chico State's column in the top of the fifth.

CSUDH stayed persistent as Guzman singled up the middle to lead off the fifth, Annalisa Nicholson reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and Simon walked to load the bases and set the table for Lyzette Reveles' grand slam.

The Cardinal and Gold will travel to NCAA Division II's top team in the nation in Humboldt State March 10-11 with first pitch set for 12 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
