Toros Fall to Division Leader Coyotes But Gets Help to Stay in CCAA Playoff Hunt

SAN BERNARDINO – Tati Yandall made 11 kills, Cathryn Lopez and Hailey Smith combined for 21 digs as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team was swept (15-25, 20-25, 22-25) by CCAA South Division leaders Cal State San Bernardino to conclude the road portion of the regular season Saturday.

Although Dominguez Hills (12-12, 8-7 CCAA) have lost two straight matches, they did get help from Cal Poly Pomona as it defeated Cal State LA in four sets, keeping the Toros and Golden Eagles in a tie for the fourth and final spot in the division standings. The Broncos win though puts them within a half of a game behind their Southern California rivals.

The race to the CCAA Championships in two weeks now be even tighter going into the final weekend of the regular season. CSUDH and CSULA will play hosts to Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego this weekend while the Broncos wrap their season on the road at Humboldt State.

Lopez continues to chase history as she is now 15 digs away from breaking Veronica Diaz's (1998-01) all-time record of 1,090.

The Toros had hit .144 on the attack. While committing only three attack errors, Yandall ended the night hitting .333.

Rylee Kiger earned 14 of the 29 total assists for CSUDH. On the defensive side, Esther Duru made five total blocks.

The Coyotes (17-7, 13-3 CCAA) hit nearly .300. Two-time reigning CCAA Player of the Week Lauren Nicholson continues to add on to her credentials for postseason accolades by recording 16 kills and 13 digs.

CSUDH had a hard-fought battle in the third game. It had jumped to a 10-6 lead but CSUSB had rallied and began a back-and-forth trade-off for the lead. Tied at 21 points apiece, the Coyotes got three straight points that proved to be the difference.

UC San Diego will visit the Torodome Friday followed by Cal State San Marcos Saturday. Both are 7 p.m. starts.
