Toros Open Home Schedule in Sweeping Fashion Over Vulcans

CARSON -- Claire Autry led all players with 10 kills while hitting .292 on the night as Cal State Dominguez Hills opened its 2016 home schedule with a thrilling 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 win over Hawai'i-Hilo to end day one of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.

Equipped with a sizeable height advantage over their visitors from Hilo, the Toros forced 23 Vulcan attack errors and outblocked UHH by an 11-6 margin in the win, moving to 2-3 on the new season.

The Vulcans got off to a quick start en route to taking a 20-15 lead, despite CSUDH making just three errors in the first set and hitting at a .268 clip.

That efficiency paid dividends down the stretch as the hosts caught UHH at 22-all on an Autry service ace, with a Vulcan attack error giving the Toros a two-point set one win.

Neither side was at its best in the second, but CSUDH found a way to storm out to an 11-5 lead, courtesy of an Autry hammer.

The Vulcans crept to within two points at 17-15 late, before a Briana Boyd service ace gave CSUDH a 2-0 lead in the match.

CSUDH scored the first four points of what proved to be the final set behind the strong serving of libero Cathryn Lopez.  UHH stormed back to take a one-point lead five times down the stretch, before a Bridget Heins kill broke a 23-23 deadlock, and a UHH error closed the set and match.

Cecelia Lucas added nine kills and Heins eight, while Lucas, setter Antonette Rolda and Malerie Crenshaw all posted three blocks.

CSUDH takes on Seattle Pacific tomorrow at 2:30 pm, the middle of five matches taking place on day two of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
