Cortinas Bat, Valinches Arm Fuel Split at East Bay

HAYWARD --- Junior Jazmyne Cortinas went 5-for-7 on the afternoon while sophomore Alyssa Valinches earned her first win since February 12 as the Cal State Domiguez Hills Toros forged a split on a Friday afternoon at Cal State East Bay, taking a 4-2 win after suffering a 6-4 loss to open the twinbill.

CSUDH snaps a four-game skid, improving to 9-20 overall, and 6-16 in the CCAA.

After going down 1-0 after one inning of play in the nightcap, the Toros scored four unanswered from the third through fifth innings after Cortinas drove home the first two on an opposite field double, with the final two Toro runs coming by way of a Pioneer error after Damari Simon reached on a fielder's choice.

That was plenty for Valinches, who tossed a complete-game victory, fanning three against five base on balls.  The sophomore made 125 pitches and survived a scare in the sixth after East Bay cut the Toro lead to 4-2 and had two runners on base before Valinches induced a grounder to third to end the threat.

Facing a four-run deficit heading into the top of the fifth inning in the opener, CSUDH answered with three runs on three RBI singles, but the hosts scored a single run in the sixth to come away with a 6-4 win to open today's twinibill despite making five errors.

After EB scored two in their first at-bat of the game, the Toros cut their deficit in half after Rachael Sandoval smacked an RBI single through the left side to score Cortinas, who doubled with one out.

That's where the score stood until the bottom of the third when East Bay sent three more runs across home plate for a commanding 5-1 lead.

The Toros then answered with three of their own with Jazmin Guzman, Cortinas and Lyzette Reveles bringing home single runs each.  CSUDH had a chance to take the lead, but EB starter Tatiana Beilstein came back to relieve a Pioneer reliever to finally get out of the jam, stranding Toro runners at the corners.

CSUDH threatened again in the sixth and seventh innings, placing two runners on with one out each, but were unable to capitalize in the eventual 6-4 decision.

The Toros left an astounding 12 runners on base, with seven knocking one hit each to go with Cortinas' four for a total of 11 hits.

Jamie Duran took the loss to fall to 5-10, tossing 122 pitches with seven strikeouts against two walks.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11 am on Pioneer Softball Field.
