Toros Breeze Past Cal State LA, Move Onto CCAA Semis

CARSON -- Senior Breanne Garcia poured in a game-high 26 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor as top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills rolled past crosstown rival and No. 8 seed Cal State L.A. in a California Collegiate Athletic Association first-round tournament game, moving onto the CCAA semifinal on Friday against No. 5 seed CS San Bernardino, which upset No. 4 seed Stanislaus State earlier tonight.

The top-seeded Toros will now head to Stockton for the semifinal round against Cal State San Bernardino, a 76-66 winner over the Warriors, for the third time this year at 5:35 p.m.  In the previous two meetings, the Toros escaped with a 63-62 win in Carson in December as Monay Lee drained a triple with 38 ticks left in regulation before CSUDH mananaged an 87-73 victory in San Bernardino behind Garcia's game-high 24 points a month later.

The Toros (21-8) bench played a critical role to the game, scoring 43 points. Imari Brown led the pack with 19 points while Ali Bettencourt continues to be a major contributor to the team, scoring a season-high 16 points. She also went 8-for-9 on the free throw line. The sophomore has reached double figures in points five of the last seven games.

Here is Bettencourt following the win.

For the first time this season Bridget Jenkins led the Toros in rebounding with a season-high 12. She's gathered 19 boards in the last two games.

In addition to her 26 points, Garcia went to the glass six times, handed five assists and picked off five times.

Altogether the Toros shot 43.5 percent from the field but made 28 of their 33 free throw attempts.

Rikke Fabricius led the effort for the Eagles (10-17) with 19 points and Christine Delapina added 10. The two combined for 15 free throws. The team itself shot 36.5 percent.

While the Toros have jumped to an early lead, the Eagles kept the deficit to no more than six throughout the first quarter. CSULA led only once, when Ali Orlich's 3-pointer put the Eagles up front, 19-17, with 8:12 remaining.

The lead lasted only 1:05 as a Brown layup tied the game and ignited a 19-3 Toro run. Garcia would hit a 3-pointer near the buzzer to give CSUDH the largest lead in the half (43-27).

CSUDH would go on to outscore the Eagles, 48-39 in the second half.
