Toros Beat Cal State Monterey Bay to Stay in CCAA Championship Hunt

SEASIDE — The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team started out on a 15-0 run and never looked back as the Toros bounced back from a loss to Cal State East Bay Friday night and walked away with a 65-56 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday to stay in the hunt for the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Toros (18-8, 16-2 CCAA) still remain a half of a game behind the first-place Pioneers, who beat Cal State L.A. in overtime. The Toros have two games remaining as they visit Chico State Thursday followed by Stanislaus State for the finale Saturday. Both times are 5:30 p.m.

Breanne Garcia scored 17 points to lead both teams for the second consecutive night, Kielyn Wilson 10 points and an impressive 16 rebounds for a double-double and Julia Poecksteiner hit all four of her baskets from behind the 3-point line to have 12 points.

Despite the 65 points, the Toros finished the night shooting 37.7 percent from field goal range.

Junior McKenna Hill led the effort for the Otters (9-17, 5-14 CCAA) on Senior NIght, scoring 15 points to be the only player in double figures. While the Otters shoot a cold 33.9 percent, they did out-rebound the Toros 44-39.

The Toros built a 15-0 lead within 5:16 to start the game. Poecksteiner had nine points during that start. Although CSUDH built itself a large lead, the Otters turned the tide around and cut the deficit to 23-21 with 3:36 remaining in the half.

CSUDH went into halftime with a 27-23 lead.
