Toros Bring Down Crosstown Rival Golden Eagles Behind Brown's 34-Point Performance

CARSON -- Imari Brown made sure that the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball senior class exit their final home game of the regular season with a win.

The junior guard scored a career-high 34 of the bench's 45 points and added 10 rebounds to give the Toros a 78-70 win over crosstown rival Cal State L.A. Saturday night.

The win also keeps the Toros (17-7, 15-1 CCAA) in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings. Second-place UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay both earned wins in their respective contests to stay within a game behind the Toros.

CSUDH will begin the regular-season-ending four-game road trip with the Pioneers in Hayward Friday.

The Toros win Saturday night also erased a bad memory from last week, when the CSULA (8-14, 6-10 CCAA) escaped with an overtime win at the Eagles Nest to hand CSUDH its only conference loss of the season.

Senior Breanne Garcia had a productive night, scoring 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and handed out five assists. Fellow senior Kielyn WIlson had six points but dished out 11 rebounds.

Monay Lee, who looking to stand alone as the program's all-time leading scorer, played the first two minutes before an injury ended her night. She didn't make any shot attempts.

The rest of the Toros, meanwhile, shot 40.7 percent from the field, despite shooting 32 percent in the opening half.

Franeka Hall, who had 31 points in last week's matchup, scored 17 points tonight against CSUDH. Kiah Knox contributed to 16 and Bree Parsons had 14. The Eagles shot 34.4 percent from field goal range.

The Toros got themselves in a hole early in the game, trailing the Eagles 11-3 with 3:06 remaining. Garcia hit a 3-point basket for the Toros points during the run. The Eagles led by eight until Garcia's 3-point basket at the buzzer cut the deficit to 17-9.

CSUDH had committed an unusual 14 turnovers in the opening quarter along with shooting 22 percent from the floor. The Toros finished with 26 turnovers total in the game.

A 10-0 run to start the quarter enabled the Toros take the lead for the first time tonight. Although the Eagles got a basket to tie the game at 19 points apiece, Brown made a layup shortly after and the Toros never trailed the rest of the way.

The Toros went into the locker room leading 28-23. The Eagles had brought the deficit as close as four points on several different occasions
