Chico State Closes Door on Toros' Season at CCAA Championship Tournament

SAN BERNARDINO - Coming off a thrilling five-set loss just six days ago to Chico State, today's opponent and the north's top seed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team felt good about the quarterfinal battle.

But sporting the league's player, setter, freshman and coach of the year, however, the Wildcats showed why they took four of the six available honors at last night's volleyball banquet en route to handing CSUDH a 25-23, 25-19, 25-20 loss.

Here's the postmatch interview featuring head coach Jennifer Adeva and All-CCAAer Claire Autry.

Bridget Heins led the Cardinal and Gold with 10 kills in CSUDH's first foray into the league tournament as it ends its season at 9-17.

Heins got the Toros off to a great start to begin the match, hammering a pair of kills to stake the South's No. 4 seed to a 2-0 lead.

The teams tied at 11-11 until the Wildcats began to separate themselves, taking a 20-15 lead before a Morelia Castro hammer stopped Chico's momentum and spurred the Toros to get to within 23-22 on a Chico attack error.

After the two teams exchanged the next two points, the Wildcats made the most of their set point as Ashton Kershner did the honors to give the favorite the opening stanza.

Chico opened up an early 6-3 lead in the second before Sarah Greenland's tough serve brought the Toros to a 10-10 tie.

After Malerie Crenshaw put away a Rylee Kiger assist for an 11-10 lead, CSUC regrouped and outscored the Toros 7-2 to take control of the set, eventually posting a 25-19 decision.

The Toros showed life in the third by taking a 6-3 lead behind the strong serving of Kiger and Castro, before Chico again found its groove, and took an 11-8 edge.  The lead swelled to as much as eight points twice before CSUDH narrowed its deficit to just 21-17 after a Chico misfire.

That would be the closest the Toros would get, however, as CSUDH pushed aside one match point on a Heins kill, but could not save an Anna Baytosh blast to end the match, giving the Wildcats the 3-0 sweep.

Next season, the Toros return eight seniors led by Honorable Mention All-CCAA Autry, looking to not only qualify for the league tournament, but make a deep run.
