Penalty Kick Dooms Women's Soccer in Loss to Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team tried to find the equalizer following a late first-half penalty kick but came up short as crosstown rival Cal State LA snuck away with a 1-0 win over the Toros at Jesse Owens Track Wednesday evening.

The Toros are handed their first CCAA loss of the season, falling to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The difference in the match came in the 35th minute, when a foul inside the Toros penalty box awarded the Golden Eagles (6-2-2, 5-0-0 CCAA) a penalty kick. Anahie Duran beat Elisa Martin for the match's only goal.

Even though six shots were recorded in the first half, the Toros went on to dominate the offensive category 15-5.

Perhaps the closest chance for the Toro to get on the board was in the 74th minute. Jada Thomas took a shot in the box but Golden Eagle keeper Adriana Maldonado made a perfectly timed dive to her right for a brilliant save.

Ida Eriksson had a close chance also earlier in the half, when she received a cross in the box but her two-touch shot was saved by Maldonado.

Maldonado finished with seven saves, Martin had four.

The Toros will travel across the state for a matchup with Chico State Sunday. Kickoff is to follow the men's match at approximately 2:00 pm.
