Win in Finale Goes for Naught as Toros Miss Out on CCAA Postseason

ARCATA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team was 45 minutes away from earning the sixth and final berth in next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament after taking a 1-0 win at Humboldt State, but Cal State San Bernardino scored a pair of second-half goals to erase a 1-nil deficit and upend Cal State San Marcos, punching its own postseason ticket on Senior Day.

The Toros actually finished in a tie for sixth place with Cal State LA, but the Golden Eagles own the tie-breaker after besting CSUDH on October 5, a 2-0 decision for the Golden Eagles.

Angel Ayala took the ball to near the left corner and crossed in it to the head of Corona far post for the match's only goal as the Toros end the 2016 campaign at 10-7-1 overall, and 7-5 in the CCAA.

The Toros controlled the action in the first 45 minutes of action, outshooting the hosts by a 7-4 count while forcing Humboldt's keeper to make four saves compared to just one for Chase Gentry.

That's where the score remained until the 73rd minute when the Toro duo connected, breaking the scoreless tie.

Gentry finished with four saves, blanking the Jacks to give him his fourth shutout of the year.

Ayala finished with a match-high 4 shots, with three coming on frame.

Next year, the Toros will return seniors in Gentry, leading scorer Joey Chica as well as defender Gabriel Rivera, looking to make a return to the league's postseason.
