Thirteen Lucky as Toros Remain Perfect in CCAA Play After 68-60 Win Over Sonoma State

CARSON -- The number 13 may be unlucky for some, but tonight it was very fortunate for the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team as it remained perfect in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at 13-0, winning its 12th-straight in the process.

Monay Lee and Imari Brown shared game-high honors with 17 points each, with Brown also grabbing a game-high 13 boards as the Toros walked away with a 68-60 result over Sonoma State Saturday night.

Including last night's win over San Francisco State, Brown completed an impressive weekend with 37 points and 22 rebounds. She also went 17-for-28 from the field.

Breanne Garcia, the CCAA's leading scorer, finished with 11 points despite fouling out with four minutes remaining. Both Garcia and Lee each collected six assists. The Toros altogether shot 39.1 percent from the floor.

It was a much different result comparing to when CSUDH ran away with the 76-45 win at Sonoma State three weeks ago. Sonoma State (8-14, 3-10 CCAA) shot 30.4 percent on its own floor but then came to the Torodome and ended up shooting 40.4 percent. Madison Burroughs and Kylie Kiech both had 16 points to lead the Seawolves.

The Seawolves had also edged the Toros (15-6) in rebounding, 40-39.

Despite the Toros taking an 11-4 lead to start the game, the Seawolves went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to one. Sonoma State led by as many as four (24-20) with 3:34 remaining in the half.

Brown would go on to score eight points during a 15-3 Toro run the rest of the half. Although Ali Bettencourt's shot with less than 10 seconds remaining missed, Kielyn Wilson picked up the rebound and scored the basket at the buzzer to give CSUDH a 35-27 lead at the half.

CSUDH had 14-lead midway through the third quarter only for it to be diminished after Sonoma State outscored the Toros 18-3 the rest of the period.

Sonoma State tried holding on to a 3-point lead until the senior duo of Garcia and Lee combined for 10 points during a 10-2 run to get the Toros back on track and a 54-51 lead with five minutes remaining. The Toros never looked back afterwards.

The Toros hit the road the next two games, starting with drive across town to rival Cal State L.A. Tuesday. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
