Jeff Falkner Named CSUDH Athletics Director

CARSON -- After an extensive and nationwide search, Cal State Dominguez Hills today announced that Jeff Falkner has been named Athletics Director for the University, it was announced by Dr. William Franklin, CSUDH Interim Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affiars.  The announcement ends a 16-month period without a permanent Athletics Director as Falkner succeeds Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah, who served as the Interim AD since November 2014.

"I want to thank President Hagan, Vice President Franklin, Dr. Jeremiah, the search committee and everyone who played a role in this process," begins an ecstatic Falkner, whose official start date is August 3.  "The South Bay is my home and my goal as CSUDH's Athletics Director is to positively impact the lives of our students, colleagues, alumni and fans.

"It is an exciting time at CSUDH with a lot of positive momentum, and I am honored and grateful to have the opportunity to continue that momentum, especially in my own backyard."

Dr. Franklin echoes Falkner's sentiments.  "We are equally as excited to welcome Jeff Falkner back to California and into the Toro Family," he begins.  "Jeff not only brings an impeccable track record of leadership, coordination and collaboration, he also possesses the right mix of devotion to the student-athlete, a winning tradition and a passion for intercollegiate sports, and we look forward to partnering with him to take Athletics to the next level.

"To that end, I must also say that working with Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah over the last year has been an honor, and as a result, the Athletics Department is in a much better position to thrive under Jeff's administration."

A Gardena native, Falkner will begin his tenure at Cal State Dominguez Hills after serving one year as Athletics Director at New Mexico Highlands, which followed a four-year stint at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, where he served in a similar capacity.

At Highlands University, Falkner was responsible for an annual budget of approximately $3.5 million and nearly tripled the school's corporate sponsor partnerships.  He also served on the Board of Governors for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, created the Highlands Sports Network, developed and implemented year-end student evaluations to collect program feedback, implemented a golf fundraiser and served as a member of the Hall of Fame selection committee.

Additionally, his student-athletes boasted an overall GPA above 3.0.

At Graceland, its student-athletes enjoyed an outstanding record of success in the classroom, garnering 97 Academic All-America honors as well as maintaining an athletic department GPA of 3.0 or better.   Besides the academic success in Falkner's tenure, Graceland boasted 144 All-Conference selections as well as 17 All-Americans, with 24 programs having been represented at NAIA National Championships in his four years.

"I am excited for the future of CSUDH Athletics with Jeff Falkner leading the way," says Jeremiah, who initially served as a consultant of the Athletics Department at the request of Dr. Hagan last summer.  "I am impressed with his integrity, his instinct for athletics, his leadership style and strength, and I am confident that he will bring the enthusiasm and direction necessary to take the program to the next level."

Prior to his arrival to Lamoni, Falkner served as Athletics Director and baseball head coach at Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky, where he led the baseball squad to a Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record of 46-17 in four seasons, a .730 winning percentage.  Brescia also boasted three-consecutive KIAC Players of the Year and a Conference Pitcher of the Year, with the Bearcats qualifying for the 2009 NAIA National Tournament and finishing the season with a 33-24 record.

Falkner earned a BA in Communications from Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, and his MA in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration from California University of Pennsylvania.  He and wife Hannah have two children, son Casey and daughter Cali.
