Toros to Defend CCAA Tournament Title After 69-66 OT Victory Over CSUSB

STOCKTON -- The "team" has been the main constant for the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team, and it was never more evident in the first California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament semifinal as the Toros held off a hard-charging Cal State San Bernardino squad en route to a 69-66 overtime win as five Toros scored in double figures, led by Breanne Garcia's 17 points, tying for game-high.

With the win, their third this year over the Coyotes, the Toros earn the right to defend their CCAA Tournament Championship tomorrow night against No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay, which upset No. 2 seed Humboldt State in the second semifinal.  The title game is set for a 5:05 pm, in Stockton Arena, with the game being streamed live on GoCCAA.org/tournament.

"We knew this would be a tough game, as having a bye is a blessing and a curse," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, obviously relieved.  "I thought CSUSB really attacked us and got shots in exactly the spots on the floor where they are comfortable, and I thought we were impatient and inefficient on offense.

"All that being said, I am proud of this group for finding a way to get it done, again, and they played together and did what was needed to get a win.

"We are very thankful and appreciative of our opportunity to play for a CCAA Tournament Championship tomorrow."

Coming in as the No. 5 seed and having already lost twice to the Toros in the regular season, the Coyotes were up to the challenge after eliminating No. 4 seed UC San Diego yesterday.

CSUDH took an early 8-2 lead on a layup by Monay Lee, only to have the Yotes answer behind Alexia Mack, outscoring CSUDH 15-4 to take a 5-point edge just six minutes later.  San Bernardino would extend its lead to 27-20 on an Adriana Brodie layup with 5:44 left in the half, before a Lee bucket cut the 8-0 Yote run.  A pair of Anandi Jimenez free throws and a Garcia jumper pulled the Toros to within 27-26 with 2:10 left before the teams entered the locker room with the Yotes up 29-28.

The second half opened as Jimenez drained another pair of free throws as the two teams exchanged leads over the first three minutes.  With 16:44 left in regulation, a pair of Talia Rayford freebies and a triple by Garcia gave CSUDH momentum and a 39-33 lead, with another pair of Jimenez free throw makes and another 3-pointer, this time by Rayford, stretched the Toro advantage to 44-33 with 13:23 left in the game.

CSUSB, however, answered by cutting its deficit to just 5 at 44-39 four minutes later, and after the Toros stretched their lead to 10 twice over the next two minutes, the Coyotes tied the game at 52-52 on the first of two Mack free throws, and took a one-point lead on the second make.

Neither team forged more than a 3-point lead the rest of the period, with Yote Briana Baker misfiring on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

In the extra period, the Yotes took a two-point lead twice courtesy of Mack, but two Rayford free throws tied the game at 64-64, and a front-end make by Rayford gave CSUDH a 65-64 lead with 2:05 left in the extra session.  A jumper by Garcia pushed CSUDH lead to three 25 seconds later before a Yote bucket cut the Toro lead to 67-66 with 1:23 left.

After a missed attempt by the Toros, the Coyotes corraled the rebound, but misfied on two shots sandwiched around an offensive board by Chelsea Austin, forcing the Yotes to foul.

Garcia made them pay with two makes with 11 seconds left, and provided the final margin after Austin misfired on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Lee finished with 15 points and five boards, with Rayford again doing it all with 14 points and 13 rebounds, the latter good for game-high honors.  Jimenez was one rebound shy of a double double after scoring 12 points, with Tayler Champion connecting on three triples to give her 11 points in the win.

The Toros drained 21 of 25 free throws compared to just 11 of 15 for the Yotes.

The Toros and Pioneers met twice this year, with CSUDH earning a 69-55 win in Hayward, before completing the regular season series sweep with a 75-63 decision at home on "Think Pink" night.
