Broncos End Toros Record-Setting Season in NCAA First Round Game, 61-57

ANCHORAGE, Ak. -- Junior Breanne Garcia led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field for No. 2 seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills, but No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona hit 18-of-22 free throws and pulled down four more rebounds as the Broncos took a 61-57 decision in an NCAA First Round game, ending CSUDH's season at 26-7.

With its 26 wins, CSUDH shattered the program's former total of wins in a single season at 22, and will return a solid core of veteran players, led by seniors Breanne Garcia and Monay Lee.

"I am extremely proud of this team, which enjoyed a tremendous season," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, obviously disappointed but not forgetful of the success her squad enjoyed this year.

"It was unfortunate that we had to play yet another CCAA opponent in the first round, but this loss takes nothing away from what this team accomplished this year and how they brought everything they had every night and performed at a consistently high level the entire season.

"They have come as close as any team I've coached to reaching their potential, and I love coaching them," she continues.

"This team has a huge hart and is relentless in its effort, and there is just no quit in them.  We just didn't play very efficiently tonight, but they have earned the respect of everyone they have played.

"I am one proud coach."

The Toros got off to a slow start, until Garcia jump-started her squad with a jumper and triple to give CSUDH a 7-6 lead five minutes in.

Talia Rayford put the Toros up 12-8 four minutes later, only to have the reigning NCAA West Region champions forge ties at 12-12 and 17-17, spurring an 11-2 run to put the Broncos up 28-19 with 3:09 left in the half, before CPP entered the break up 31-24.

A Garcia layup and two free throws by Anandi Jimenez opened the second half scoring, with a triple by Garcia at 15:41 giving the Toros a 36-35 lead.

But like they did in the first half, the Broncos knotted the game behind a Jada Blackwell layup, and took a 41-37 lead on their next two possessions.

An old-fashioned 3-point play by Tayler Champion got the Toros close, before a Monay Lee free throw tying the game at 41-41 with 10 minutes left in regulation.

That's when CPP began to take charge, opening up a 7-point lead behind Ariel Marsh's 3-pointer.  Garcia, however, kept her team in it with a pair of free throws, with a Kielyn Wilson layup and two more Garcia freebies getting the Toros to within 50-49 with 5:35 left.

Marsh answered with her own free throw makes to put a stop to CSUDH's momentum, with CPP leading by four with two minutes to go.

Two misses on consecutive possessions, however, saw 60 seconds tick off the clock, until a Jimenez layup brought CSUDH to within 59-57 with 37 seconds left.

Looking for a steal, CSUDH inadvertently fouled Marsh, who drained both her free throw attempts for a four-point lead with 12 ticks remaining.

The Toros managed three attempts in those 12 seconds with a pair of offensive boards coming late, but none of those attempts hit their target, as the Broncos took home the hard-fought win.

Garcia added three steals and three assists, while Champion pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, while contributing six points, nearly half of her PPG average.

Rayford finished with 11 points in her final season as a Toro, pulling down six boards while adding five assists.

The Toros shot just .311 for the game and .875 from the line (14-for-16), but CPP connected for one more field goal and four more free throws to spoil CSUDH's dream season.
