Late-Inning Power Surge Lifts Toros to 5-2 Win Over Providence

CARSON -- Tied at 2-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning against visiting Providence Christian College, Kamran Young and Juan Avena powered Cal State Dominguez Hills with home runs to take the lead for good in an eventual 5-2 victory over the Sea Beggars.

With the win, CSUDH moves to 4-1 on the new year.

In the first meeting ever between the two teams, with this being Providence's first year in intercollegiate baseball, CSUDH earned single runs in the first two innings as a Brady Conlan RBI single plated leadoff hitter Brandon Polizzi in the first inning, with Adrian Guzman beating out an infield single in the second to bring home Spencery Maxey for a 2-0 lead.

Jeffrey Gogue, who pitched 3.0 innings in a predetermined start, gave up just one hit, with Winston Lavendier following suit over the next 3.0 innings of work to keep the Sea Lions scoreless entering the 7th.

In the 7th, Albert Flores was a recipient of bad luck, as a Sea Beggar pounded a double after a dropped pop up in foul territory.  That proved costly as a groundout gave PCC its first run of the game, cutting CSUDH's lead in half.

Fernando Gallegos entered in the 8th and allowed a one-out double, with consecutive singles from the next two batters tying the game at 2-2.

That's when CSUDH erupted for three on blasts by Young and Avena, giving the Toros the lead for good.

The Sea Beggars threatened in the 9th after a hit batter and single up the middle, but reliever Bryce Shea induced a ground out for the final out of the game, preserving the 5-2 win.

CSUDH hosts its alumni tomorrow morning before traveling to Cal Baptist for the first game of a three-game set, with the middle contest in Carson on Friday, February 13, at 1 pm.
