Warriors Escape CCAA Tourney Semifinals with Penalty Kick Win Over Toros

POMONA -- Trailing by one at the half, the No. 9 and top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team net the equalizer on a goal by Pedro Velasquez in the 63rd minute.

And although the Toros and Stanislaus State play to a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods, it was the Warriors who is advancing to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament final by sneaking away with a 3-1 penalty kick victory on a chilly Friday evening at Cal Poly Ponoma.

The NCAA will now decide the Toros postseason Monday at 3:-00 p.m.

As expected, the match was physical from start to finish. Both teams combined for 36 fouls and seven cards were issued, including two ejections.

CSUDH (14-2-3) outshot Stanislaus State (15-3-2), 19-7, including tallying 10 in the second half.

Stanislaus State found the back of the net first without a Warrior touching the ball. Stanislaus State was awarded with a throw-in opportunity leveled with the top of the penalty box line. Rocha reached high in attempt to clear it and did get his head on it, but it still slipped by. Ehi Isibor did knock it out, but by a judgment call by the officials, Stanislaus State was awarded with the goal.

After numerous attacks in the second half, the Toros came through when Gabriel Rivera and Joey Chica worked together from midfield to sent the ball up front to Pedro Valasquez, who fought a defender but beat Kalbough to the left side for the equalizer.

With the match already aggressive since the opening kick, CSUDH had a bigger challenge by playing shorthanded after Chica received a second yellow card in the 78th minute.

The playing field would become even after Warrior Ramiro Ceja was dismissed from the field in the 106th minute.

After Rocha's successful penalty kick followed by a Gentry block to give the Toros a 1-0 lead in the first round, the Warriors made the next three while Klabough stopped all three CSUDH shots to send them to the next round.
