Broncos Knock Out Toros in NCAA Third Round with Second-Half Goal

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Cal State Dominguez Hills' run through the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship came to a halt in the third round Friday as California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals and top seed Cal Poly Pomona reclaimed the lead in the second half to knock out the third seed Toros and win the West Region title.

The Toros 2015 season ends at 15-3-4.

It was a well balanced first half between the two sides. Cal Poly Pomona did strike first at the 11:187 mark when leading scorer Christian Gonzalez Diaz flicked a cross by Alexander Turkson to beat keeper Chase Gentry.

The Toros had tried to answer back midway through the first half with three consecutive corner kicks, but shots by Jaime Rios and D'Morea Alewine sailed high.

CSUDH did find the back of the net in the 39th minute. Brian Chavez received a cross from Gabriel Rivera, made several touches before firing from the top of the box to score the equalizer.

CSUDH edged CPP in total shots 6-5 during the opening half.

Although the Toros had their chances to take the lead, it was the Broncos who capitalized on an opportunity in the 76th minute. Sergi Monso kept the ball in the box long enough for Kris Korich to set up an open shot and tally the winning goal.

The Toros had dominated the shooting the department 19-8, with Chavez taking four of them.

Gentry made two saves on the evening while on the other end of the pitch Fernan Pablo Quevedo stopped three.
