Toros Drop Season Opener in 66-63 Decision to Winona State

ANAHEIM -- Winona State outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills 26-11 in an un-Toro like first quarter, and held on to a 66-63 win in game one of the Conference Commissioners Association Division II Tip-Off Classic.  Senior Breanne Garcia led the Toros with 19 points while adding five boards, but fouled out with 3:08 left in regulation as WSU withstood a late flurry to kick off 2015-16.

Monay Lee finished the morning with 16 points and six boards; Femi Hamilton added 13 points and Kielyn Wilson gathered a dozen rebounds to lead the Toros in that column.

Free throws were the difference in the game as the Warriors made all but one of their 25 attempts. Garcia also had five of the Toros 13 free throws.

Altogether, the Toros shot 35.2 percent from the field while holding the Warriors to 33.9.

Three Winona players reached double figures. Alexi Foley led the pack with 18, followed by Tara Roelofs with 14 and Kayla Timmerman with 12.

Trailing 35-26 at the start of the second half, the Toros turned to defense and 10 of 16 turnovers in the second half.

CSUDH found itself in a 20-point deficit when Timmerman hit a jumper to give Winona State a 35-15 lead with 5:32 remaining in the opening half. The Toros cut the lead down to nine, 35-26, at the half.

The Warriors lead would disappear completely when Lee scored five points in the span of one minute to tie the contest, 56-56, with 3:08 remaining. Hamilton's layup nine seconds later gave the Toros their only lead in the game.

CSUDH returns to the Anaheim Convention Center when it closes out day two of the CCA Tipoff Classic against Alaska Anchorage. Opening tip is slated at 8:30 p.m.
