Brown Sets Career Assist Record Despite Sweep by Otters

CARSON -- Junior setter Dana Brown set the Cal State Dominguez Hills all-time career set assist mark early in set one, but visiting Cal State Monterey Bay spoiled the celebration by virtue of a convincing 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 win over the Toros.

The Toros dip to 1-9, 0-6 CCAA, while CSUMB improves to 2-8, 2-4 CCAA.

Needing just four set assists to become the all-time career leader in just her junior season, Brown notched her record-setter on an assist to Alijah Gunsaulus in the set's 22nd point, cutting CSUMB's lead to 14-8.

The Otters, however, would keep the Toros at arm's length the rest of the way, taking set one 25-17.

Set two was cloer as the teams exchanged leads throughout the set, with the Toros taking a 13-11 edge on a Taryn McCullouch blast, courtesy of a Brown assist.

CSUMB, meanwhile, regained control of the set with an 18-15 lead, and withstood a late rally by the Toros to down the hosts 25-23 and take a two set to none lead.

The finale was all Monterey Bay as the visitors opened up a 20-12 lead and cruised to a 25-16 decision.

The Otters hit .255 for the match compared to .104 for CSUDH, notching eight more kills and six less attack errors. Gunsaulus led the Toros with 10 kills with Otter Julia Ashen leading all players with 15 putaways.

CSUDH takes to the road for three matches next week, beginning at Cal State L.A. on Tuesday to close the month of September.
