No. 22 Sonoma State Takes Down Toros in Three

Box Score

CARSON -- Coming off a four-set loss to Cal State L.A. last night on the front end of their southern California roadtrip, No. 22 Sonoma State made quick work of a young Cal State Dominguez Hills squad in a 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 sweep.

Alijah Gunsaulus led the Toros with 11 kills and just 2 errors as CSUDH dropped to 1-5, 0-2 CCAA.

The two teams kept up with each other in a sloppy first set that saw a combined 18 kills and 15 errors.  SSU scored the first four points of the match until CSUDH took an 11-10 lead, with the teams tying at 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 17 late.  The Seawolves, however, finished the set strong, out-scoring the hosts 8-2 to take the opening stanza.

It was more of the same in the second as SSU turned a slim 5-4 lead into a 20-14 edge, until the Toros clawed back and trimmed their deficit to 21-20 on a SSU attack error.

The visitors regrouped, however, withstanding two missed set points to take set two on a Madelyn Densberger putaway.

Set three saw CSUDH take an early 8-6 lead on a Gunsaulus hammer, until the Seawolves used an 11-3 spurt to take control of the set at 17-11.

That was more than enough as SSU took set three 25-16 to complete the three-game sweep.

Hannah Warner and Hailey Smith clubbed three kills each to follow Gunsaulus' lead, but CSUDH was held to an .097 hitting percentage with just 10 more kills than errors committed.

SSU, meanwhile, hit .230, tallying 23 more kills than errors made.

The Toros will take to the road for CCAA action next weekend at Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego, before returning home on September 26 to host Cal State East Bay.
