No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona Runs Away After Intermission in 73-54 Win Over Toros

Box Score

POMONA -- Trailing 41-39 with 14:32 left in regulation, host and No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona out-scored Cal State Dominguez Hills 34-13 to run away with a 73-54 win that clinched at least a tie for the CCAA regular season title.

Monay Lee led the Toros with 19 points in the loss as the Broncos swept the regular season series with the win, and gave CSUDH two-consecutive losses for the first time this year.

The Toros took an early 10-5 lead on a pair of Lee foul shots with five minutes elapsed, only to have the Broncos answer with a 12-2 run to take a 17-12 edge six minutes later, before a Breanne Garcia jumper with 14 ticks left in the first half brought the Toros to within 28-26 entering the break.

CSUDH used that momentum to regain the lead on its first possession of the second half, courtesy of a Julie Poecksteiner triple.

The Toros stretched their lead to 41-37 on a Lee bucket at the 15:32 mark when CPP started to exert its will by going on an 11-0 run to take control of the game for good.

A Talia Rayford 3-pointer put a brief halt to CPP's momentum, but the Green and Gold ran its advantage to as much as 14 at the 7:28 mark, hitting a gamehigh 20 points at 71-51 with 2:24 left in regulation, putting an exclamation point on the 73-54 final.

Rayford aded nine points with Tayler Champion and Poecksteiner held to six apiece.

Jada Blackwell and JJ Judge each went for 23 as CPP out-scored CSUDH 45-28 in the second half.

Coupled with Cal State L.A.'s loss at Humboldt State tonight, the Toros and Golden Eagles fall into a two-way tie for third place, one half game behind Chico State, which plays at CS Monterey tomorrow night.

The Toros will head to Arcata for their final regular season road game, with Saturday's first tip set for 5:30 pm.
