Garcia Notches Career High as Toros Take Down Golden Eagles in 69-55 Decision

CARSON -- Coming off a career-high en route to her first CCAA Player of the Week honor two weeks ago, Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Breanne Garcia upped the ante by a new career-high 27 points as the Toros downed cross-town rival Cal State L.A. 69-55 to sweep the regular season series.

The Toros remain unbeaten in conference play, moving to 4-0 in the CCAA, and 7-3 overall after winning their fifth-straight, and fourth in a row by at least 14 points.

Both teams played like the crisp weather surrounding the southern California area, with neither able to find the bottom of the net for nearly three minutes.

CSUDH continued its cold shooting touch as the Golden Eagles jumped to an 8-2 lead at 14:13, just four days after the Toros cruised to a 19-point win over CSULA in Los Angeles.

Shooting just 17% from the field early on, CSULA kept its edge as far as 13 minutes into the game, reaching 16-9 with 7:13 left in the half.

That's when a Tayler Champion triple spurred a scoring spree that the rest of the Toros joined in on, as another Champion bucket followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Garcia brought the Toros to within 16-14.

Champion then gave CSUDH its first lead of the night with a triple, which Garcia duplicated to give the Toros a 20-16 edge with 5:19 left.

CSULA regained the lead a minute later, until a Monay Lee layup gave the Toros the lead for good as they entered the break with a 28-21 lead.

A Garcia triple to open the second half pushed CSUDH's lead to 10, with buckets by Lee, Julia Poecksteiner and Talia Rayford scoring back-to-back-to-back baskets for a 38-21 edge with 16:31 left in regulation.

Champion gave CSUDH its first 20-point lead at 14:23 with a 3-pointer, before a Rayford bucket in the paint pushed the advantage to a game-high 24 points with just under 10 minutes left in the game, before CSUDH settled for a 14-point win to sweep the regular season series.

Garcia finished shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 14-of-17 from the foul line, with Champion contributing 13 points and Rayford 12.

CSUDH used its considerable size advantage to the tune of a 42 to 28 rebounding edge, with Champion and Lee pulling down seven each to lead the way.

The Toros clawed their way back to a respectable 38.9 shooting percentage from the floor, but connected for four more triples and four more foul shots in the win.

CSUDH will pack its bags for a pair of games at Simon Fraser this Saturday and Sunday to conclude the calendar year.
