Toros Roar Back From Two Sets Down to Out-Warrior Warriors in Five

Claire Autry played a huge role as the Toros picked up their first league win of the year in an epic comeback
Box Score

TURLOCK -- True freshman Claire Autry's 14 kills led three Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in double-figure scoring as the Toros roared back from a two-sets-to-none deficit to shock host Cal State Stanislaus, picking up their first league win of the year.

The Toros move to 2-11, 1-8 CCAA, while the Warriors fall to 1-12, 1-8 CCAA.

After dropping the first two sets by identical 25-23 scores, CSUDH took control of the third behind Rylee Kiger's serve, jumping out to a 4-0 lead.

CSUS knotted the game at 13 on a service ace, only to have CSUDH run off the next eight points to take control of the set, courtesy of Kiger's strong serving.

The Warriors looked to end the match in three by getting back to within one at 24-23, but a Taryn McCullouch kill on set point gave the Toros life and their first set of the match.

Set four saw CSUDH keep its momentum going, taking a 7-3 lead on a block assist by McCullouch and Alijah Gunsaulus, prompting a Warrior time out.

CSUDH paid no attention to the hiatus, pushing its edge to 18-9 on a Gunsaulus hammer.

Rolling to a 24-17 lead, the Warriors threw a scare into the Toros with seven-straight points to knot the set a 24-all, with the two teams tying at 25-all until a CSUS attack error and Hannah Warner exclamation point evened the match at two sets apiece.

After the Warriors a 5-2 lead in the fifth, the Toros stormed back behind Dana Brown's serve and kills by Gunsaulus and Autry to take a 6-5 lead, keeping the one-point edge until the Warriors tied the set at 11-all.

That's when CSUDH finished strong behind Warner's serving, with the Warriors committing two attack errors in the process to bring the set to 14-11 Toros, with a Kiger kill at 14-12 sealing CSUDH's first league win of the year.

Gunsaulus added 12 kills and Jilianne Pineda 10, while Kiger served three aces for team high honors.

Brown set 45 balls with Leilani Martinez added 15 digs, aided by 13 each by Pineda and Korryne Kelley.

CSUDH returns home next weekend to host national power and eight-time defending CCAA Champion in CS San Bernardino.
