UC San Diego Takes 3-0 Sweep Over Game Toro Squad

CARSON -- Although on opposite ends of the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, Cal State Dominguez Hills gave visiting UC San Diego all it could handle despite the Tritons coming away with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 decision.

Bridget Heins paced the Toros with seven kills in a loss that drops the Toros to 2-16, 1-13 CCAA.  UCSD, meanwhile, improves to 11-6, 9-4 CCAA.

The Tritons scored the first 8 points of the game to take control early, before CSUDH used an 11-6 run to bring them to within 14-11, the 11th point coming on a Halley Smith service ace.

A Smith blast and ensuing point off the serve of Dana Brown brought the Toros to within two at 18-16, with the teams splitting the next 10 points until a Danielle Dahle kill gave UCSD set point, and a Toro overpass and hammer by Alyssa McNeely ended the set at 25-21 in favor of the visitors.

In set two, the Toros took their first lead of the match on a Triton error to start the set, only to have UCSD regain momentum en route to a 17-9 edge.

A serving error put a halt to the run, but a Kameron Cooper kill and setting error by CSUDH pushed the Triton lead to 19-10, with another Cooper putaway and quick attack by UCSD setter Alyssa Lin adding two more points for the visitors, giving them a 21-11 lead.

Up 23-16 after a spirited Toro run fueled by libero Leilani Martinez's serve, a serving error gave UCSD set point, and after a pair of Morelia Castro kills saved two set points, a host serving error proved decisive as the Tritons took a 25-18 set two win.

A Heins hammer to begin set three got the Toros off to a good start, with a block assist by Brown and Taryn McCullouch staking the hosts to a 2-0 lead.

CSUDH maintained its lead that reached as much as three points on two occasions behind the arm of Brown, only to have UCSD knot the game at 15-15.

A Castro tool after a Toro timeout brought momentum back to the Cardinal and Gold, only to have UCSD run off five-straight points to take a 20-16 lead, until a Claire Autry kill from a Brown feed cut into the Triton run.

That seemed to rejuvinate CSUDH as Heins and McCullouch teamed to stuff Caitlin Brenton to make the score 20-18, with a McCullough putaway following one by UCSD made the score 21-19 Tritons.

A solo stuff by Heins inched CSUDH to within 21-20, with a Rylee Kiger ace knotting the game at 21-all, setting up the fantastic finish.

Another tough serve by Kiger produced an errant free ball by CSUDH to give the hosts a 22-21 lead, until a kill and block assist by UCSD turned momentum blue.

A Triton ace provided UCSD with a set point, and a Bailey Turk back row hammer delivered the final blow in the 25-22 final.

CSUDH hosts Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow night in its designated "Dig 4 A Cure" night, with first serve set for 7 pm in the Torodome.
