Jacks Too Tough in Sweep Over Toros

CARSON -- One night after running into the buzzsaw that is No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino, the handsaw that is Humboldt State paid Carson a visit and swept host Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team in a 25-16, 25-19, 25-17 decision.

The Toros fall to 2-13, 1-10 CCAA, despite Alijah Gunsaulus leading all hitters with 11 kills in the match.

CSUDH managed to hit in the positive tonight at .111, but HSU out did the hosts with a .250 percentage for the match, led by Nicole Bewley and Symone Hayden, the top two kill leaders who hit .615 and .350, respectively, and accounted for a combined 19 kills.

HSU made just 12 errors tonight, compared to 22 for the Toros, while serving seven aces to just one for CSUDH.

The first set was tight until the teams were deadlocked at 12-12, when HSU scored the next six points to take control of the set en route to a 25-16 final.

HSU continued its momentum in the second wby taking a 16-9 lead, only to have CSUDH claw back to 16-13 behind Leilani Martinez's serve.

The Jacks, however, maintained at least a 3-point lead the rest of way in the 25-19 set, taking control of the match.

The third and final set saw CSUDH notch an early lead at 7-4 on a Rylee Kiger kill and HSU error, only to have the Jacks go on a 10-2 run for a 14-9 lead.

The Toros pulled to within 17-14 on another Jack miscue, but HSU more than made up for it with an 8-3 run to put the game and match away.

Jilianne Pineda added six kills while Martinez notched a team-best 15 digs.

CSUDH begins the CCAA's second half on the road next weekend, starting with an October 17 date at Sonoma State.
