Whitney Lee put down 12 kills in tonight's loss against the Broncos
Box Score

POMONA -- Firing on all offensive cylinders after going undefeated at last weekend's UCSD Invitational, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team hit just .095 as Cal Poly Pomona held serve to open CCAA play tonight, taking a 3-1 win.

Senior Whitney Lee helped pace the Toros with 12 kills and two block assists, while the Broncos put down a season-high 14 blocks, including seven by Alexa Hasen, in handing CSUDH just its second loss of the year.

The Broncos got a balanced defensive effort in the back row as well as five CPP players all collected double-digit dig totals.

That effort contributed to the Toros hitting just .095 on the attack, including a .050 mark in the fourth and final set.

The match actually started out completely in the favor of the Toros as the visitors ran off a 7-0 rally to open the first set. A kill from Elle Moffatt stopped that spurt and CPP slowly worked its way back into contention.

With Cramer serving about midway through the set, the Broncos turned an 11-6 deficit into an 11-11 tie. Four of those five points ended in a CPP block. The Broncos closed the frame out on a 3-0 run to take the 25-20 result as Jessica Doerner and Moffatt contributed kills on the final two points.

The Toros stole back some of the momentum in the second set. Dominguez Hills held a slim 18-17 lead late in the frame but closed out the set strong, getting stellar serving from Alijah Gunsaulus and a few key kills by Tarryn Luafalemana. The Toros took that second set by a margin of 25-22.

In the third set, Dominguez Hills once again reached the 10-point mark before the Broncos for the third time in the match. That didn't stop CPP from rallying though as the blocks continued to pile up. Trailing 20-15 at one point, the Broncos got key kills from Jones and Herrera closed out the 25-21 set win with six-straight serves and an ace to go along with it.

CPP didn't trail at all during the fourth and final set, which went the way of the hosts by a score of 25-21.

The Toros will look to notch their first CCAA win of the season on Saturday as they travel to Arcata to face Humboldt State at 7 pm.
